Age Calculator
Computes exact age in whole years, months and days, plus total days and weeks lived and days until the next birthday, by calendar-unit counting: it finds the latest monthly anniversary of the birth date that has already arrived, reads the whole years and months off it, then adds the plain days since. An anniversary that would overshoot a short month lands on that month's last day, so 31 January to 29 February is one whole month and no spare days. Total days come from UTC calendar arithmetic, subtracting the two dates in milliseconds and dividing by 86,400,000. Inputs are a date of birth and an optional as-of date that defaults to today.

The years-months-days line is what people usually mean by an age; the totals underneath are handy for milestones, day-based medication dosing and record-keeping.
How the counting works
Age is not a single subtraction, because months and years are not fixed lengths. The calculator counts the way a person would by hand:
- Find the latest monthly anniversary of the birth date that has already arrived.
- Read the whole years and months that anniversary stands for.
- Count the plain days from it to the second date.
Some anniversaries fall on a date that does not exist. There is no 31 February, so a birth on the 31st takes the last day of any shorter month as its anniversary there: 31 January plus one month is 28 February in a common year and 29 February in a leap year. Clamping that way is what keeps the days figure at zero or above, and it is why 31 January to 1 March reads as 1 month and 1 day rather than as a month minus two days.
So for someone born on 15 May 1990, on 22 July 2026 the count is 36 full years (to 15 May 2026), 2 full months (to 15 July), and 7 days — 36 years, 2 months, 7 days. The years-months-days breakdown is what people mean by their age, but the total number of days lived is a plain subtraction of the two calendar dates:
days = (date2 − date1) ÷ 86,400,000
That divisor is the number of milliseconds in a day: 86,400 seconds, each of 1,000 milliseconds. Both dates are anchored at midday UTC before the subtraction, so the difference is always a whole number of days and no clock shift can nudge the answer across a boundary. For the same example it gives 13,217 days, a figure that already absorbs the 9 leap days that fell in that span — 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024. Weeks are just that total divided by seven and rounded down, which comes to 1,888.
A short history of counting age
Counting age precisely depends on a stable calendar, and the calendar most of the world now uses took the better part of two thousand years to settle. In 46 BC Julius Caesar, advised by the Alexandrian astronomer Sosigenes, replaced Rome's drifting lunisolar calendar with a solar one of 365.25 days, adding a single leap day every fourth year. The old republican year ran to 355 days and stayed in step with the seasons only when the priests inserted an extra month, which they did erratically and sometimes for political convenience. To realign it Caesar stretched 46 BC to 445 days, a span later writers called the last year of confusion. The reformed Julian calendar took force on 1 January 45 BC and served Europe for roughly sixteen centuries.
The quarter-day estimate was slightly too generous. A Julian year runs about eleven minutes longer than the true solar year, enough to slip a full day roughly every 128 years, and by the sixteenth century the accumulated error had pushed the spring equinox some ten days off 21 March, the date the Council of Nicaea had worked from in 325. That mattered because the timing of Easter was tied to it. On 24 February 1582 Pope Gregory XIII issued the bull Inter gravissimas, dropping ten days so that Thursday 4 October 1582 was followed directly by Friday 15 October. He also tightened the leap rule: a year is a leap year when divisible by four, except century years, which qualify only when divisible by 400. That makes 2000 a leap year but 1900 and 2100 ordinary ones, and it brings the average year down to 365.2425 days — close enough that the calendar will not drift a full day against the sun for thousands of years.
Adoption was slow and uneven. Catholic states switched first, while Britain and its colonies held out until 1752, when 2 September was followed by 14 September and eleven days vanished at a stroke. Russia waited until 1918 and Greece until 1923. This history is more than trivia for an age calculator: a total-days figure that spans a country's calendar reform must account for the days that were simply skipped, which is one reason genealogists treat dates before the local switch with care. Recording ages at all is far older still — Roman censors registered each citizen's age and property, sorting men of military age, roughly 17 to 45, as iuniores and older men as seniores — but for most of history people knew their own age only roughly. Civil registration of births arrived late and unevenly: France introduced it in 1792, England and Wales only on 1 July 1837, and even there registration did not become a legal duty on parents until the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1874 took effect on 1 January 1875. For any birth in living memory the Gregorian rules apply throughout, so the day count the calculator returns is exact.
Age is not counted the same way everywhere
Not every tradition counts age from zero. The traditional East Asian system, rooted in China and long shared across the region, considered a newborn one year old at birth and added a year to everyone at the lunar New Year rather than on individual birthdays. A baby born days before New Year could therefore be reckoned two years old while barely a week into life. Japan set the Western method in law with the Act on Calculation of Ages of 1902 and reinforced it with a further law that took effect on 1 January 1950, though the older kazoedoshi count lingered in ceremonial use. South Korea was the last major holdout: a law effective on 28 June 2023 made the international count official for administrative and legal purposes, and many Koreans found themselves a year or two younger on paper overnight. This calculator uses the international method throughout — age zero at birth, one year added on each birthday.
Dates are compared, not clocks
The calculation works on calendar dates, deliberately ignoring time of day and time zones. Everyone becomes a year older at midnight on their birthday, wherever they are. This avoids the classic off-by-one bugs that appear when daylight-saving transitions make a "day" 23 or 25 hours long, and it means the day count between two dates is identical whether you ask in Tokyo or Toronto.
Odd but correct results
Calendar counting produces a few results that look wrong until you check them by hand. The stretch from 31 August to 1 October is "1 month, 1 day" even though it is only 31 days long. Someone born on 31 January 2024 is "1 month, 0 days" old on 29 February 2024, because 29 February is as far as their monthly anniversary can reach that month, even though only 29 actual days have passed. And a person born 29 February 2000 is 25 years, 11 months and 30 days old on 28 February 2026 — the last day before their counting rolls over. These are the standard conventions, and they match how registries, schools and doctors count age.
Assumptions and limitations
The calculator reads calendar dates only, so it has no notion of the hour of birth; two babies born a few hours apart across midnight are simply given different birth dates. It assumes both dates fall under the Gregorian rules, which holds for essentially any birth in the countries and centuries the tool is used for. Leap-day birthdays are handled by rolling the anniversary to 1 March in common years. That is the rule written into Hong Kong law since 1990 and the one generally applied in the United Kingdom, but it is not universal: New Zealand and some US states treat 28 February as the legal birthday instead, so a leapling checking an official age threshold should confirm which convention applies locally. The next-birthday countdown always points at a date that genuinely exists, and the years-months-days line uses the same rolled anniversary, so the two can never disagree: on 1 March in a common year a leapling's age reads a whole number of years and the countdown reads zero. This is the one place where the age figure parts company with the plain date-difference tool, which has no birthdays to honour and clamps a 29 February start back to 28 February like any other month end. Because every figure is pure date arithmetic, the results carry no rounding beyond the deliberate rounding-down of whole weeks.

Why does the days part depend on which months are involved?
Months are different lengths, so the leftover days are counted against the actual month in question. Going from 31 January to 1 March is 1 month and 1 day, even though it spans only 29 or 30 actual days — that is how calendar-based age counting works everywhere from passports to pediatric records.
What happens if I was born on 29 February?
In common years the calculator rolls the anniversary forward to 1 March, the rule written into Hong Kong law and generally applied in the United Kingdom. Both the years-months-days line and the next-birthday countdown use that same rolled date, so on 1 March a leapling's age reads a whole number of years and the countdown reads zero. The countdown always points at a date that actually exists.
Is this the same age used in East Asia?
Not always. Traditional East Asian reckoning counted people as one year old at birth and added a year at New Year. South Korea only standardized on the international system — the one this calculator uses — in June 2023.
