Enter your dog's age and size class and the calculator returns three readings: a human-age equivalent from a widely used veterinary chart, an estimate from the epigenetic clock published in Cell Systems in 2020, and a life stage. The two ages rarely agree, and the gap is not a defect: one is veterinary convention, the other measured chemical changes to DNA in a single breed. Both are estimates.

How the conversion works

The main output follows a size-based chart that circulates widely in veterinary material, attributed to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). The calculator anchors its four size classes — small at 20 lb or less, medium 21 to 50 lb, large 51 to 90 lb, giant above 90 lb — on the four rows that chart publishes: every class reads 15 human years at age 1, then 36, 37, 40 and 42 at age 5, then 56, 60, 66 and 78 at age 10, and 76, 83, 93 and 115 at age 15. Between two adjacent published rows it interpolates linearly. Past the last row it extends each class at that class's final per-year rate — 4 for small, 4.6 for medium, 5.4 for large and 7.4 for giant. The chart has no row below age 1, so the form starts there.

The chart tracks the guideline of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), which puts the first year of a medium-sized dog's life at about 15 human years, the second at about 9 more, and each year after that at roughly 5. As a formula for dogs aged two and up:

human age ≈ 24 + 5 × (dog age − 2)

The second output is the epigenetic clock:

human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31

The natural logarithm makes the curve steep early and flat late: dogs do most of their aging young. It also collapses at the young end, returning 31 at age 1 and going negative below about 0.14 years, the second reason ages under a year are out of range. The life stage line follows the AAHA's 2019 division into puppy, young adult, mature adult and senior; because one year is the first accepted age, the reading is always young adult, mature adult or senior, and senior arrives earlier for bigger dogs.

A worked example

Take a 7-year-old large dog. On the chart, age 7 sits between the published age-5 row of 40 and the age-10 row of 66, a rise of 26 over 5 years, or 5.2 per year. Two years past that row gives 40 + 2 × 5.2 = 50.4 human years, and the life stage reads senior, since seven is past the six-year threshold used for large dogs. The epigenetic clock says ln(7) = 1.9459, times 16 is 31.13, plus 31 is 62.1, which rounds to 62. The AVMA arithmetic lands lower still: 15 + 9 + 5 × 5 = 49. Mid-life is where the models pull apart most; by age 10 they have drawn closer: guideline 64, the chart's medium column 60, the clock 68, against the 70 the discarded 7-to-1 rule would give.

Seven centuries of dog arithmetic

A dog-to-human comparison has sat in the floor of Westminster Abbey since 1268, when the Cosmati pavement before the high altar was laid by order of Henry III. Its inscription encodes a prediction of the end of the world as a chain of lifespans: in the abbey's translation, a hedge lives for three years, then dogs, horses, men, stags, ravens, eagles, enormous whales and the world each triple the years of the one before. Worked through, the series gives a dog 9 years, a horse 27 and a man 81 — a 9-to-1 ratio that the inscription implies but never states.

By the eighteenth century, as Priceonomics recounts, the French naturalist Georges Buffon was proposing that humans live to 90 or 100 and dogs to 10 or 12. The first stage-matched comparison came in 1953 from a French researcher — Smithsonian describes the work, and Priceonomics names him as A. Lebeau — who showed that a dog ages 15 to 20 times as fast as a human during its first year, the ratio tapering to about one to five later: one dog year roughly 15 human years, two about 24, then around four more per year. Today's AVMA guideline of 15, 9 and 5 closely echoes Lebeau.

The famous 7-to-1 rule is younger and lazier: it emerged in the 1950s and seems to rest on two round numbers, people living to about 70 and dogs to about 10. The AVMA now says outright that a dog does not age seven human years for every year of its own. As for why it spread, William Fortney, a veterinarian at Kansas State University, offered the Wall Street Journal a guess rather than a finding: a marketing ploy, a way to encourage owners to bring their pets in at least once a year.

The Labrador clock

The formula behind the second output comes from a study published in Cell Systems in 2020 by Tina Wang, Trey Ideker and colleagues at UC San Diego, with Elaine Ostrander's group at the National Human Genome Research Institute. The team took blood samples from 104 Labrador retrievers aged from four weeks to 16 years and read each dog's DNA methylation, the chemical marks that accumulate on the genome as mammals age, then matched that remodeling against the same process in humans to produce 16 × ln(age) + 31.

The clock's checkpoints line up with familiar biology. In the NHGRI release, an eight-week-old puppy lands at about nine months of human age, infancy in both species, and the 12-year expected lifespan of a senior Labrador maps to 70, the worldwide average life expectancy. A 1-year-old dog comes out like a 30-year-old human.

The research group acknowledges the formula rests largely on data from Labrador retrievers alone; with a single breed in the study, as the AKC puts it, another breed's reading may not line up.

Why size matters

The chart's four columns fan out because large dogs age faster. The AKC quotes Cornelia Kraus, a researcher at the University of Göttingen whose 2013 study of the size-lifespan trade-off in dogs appeared in The American Naturalist; her analysis found that each 4.4 pounds (2 kg) of body mass costs a dog about a month of life expectancy, and large dogs' lives, in her phrase, seem to unwind in fast motion. The life tables agree. Teng and colleagues built them from 30,563 UK companion dogs that died between 2016 and 2020, published in Scientific Reports in 2022: life expectancy at age 0 was 11.23 years overall — 11.41 for females against 11.07 for males — with Jack Russell Terriers longest at 12.72 years and French Bulldogs shortest at 4.53.

Faster aging pulls the senior label earlier. AVMA guidance, quoted by the AKC, considers small dogs senior at about seven, while larger breeds are often senior at five to six. The AAHA's 2019 canine life stage guidelines define the stages relative to the individual dog instead: puppy until about six to nine months, young adult until three to four years, mature adult from there to the start of the last quarter of estimated lifespan, and senior for that final 25 percent.

Assumptions and conventions

The chart's exact cell values follow the version published by the retailer Chewy, which attributes the table to the AAHA, so treat it as a rule of thumb anchored by the AVMA's 15, 9 and 5 guideline, not a standards document. That chart publishes four rows, at ages 1, 5, 10 and 15, and the calculator uses those alone: it interpolates only between two adjacent published rows, and beyond age 15 it continues at each class's final per-year rate, so a 20-year-old small dog reads 76 + 5 × 4 = 96. An age under a year returns a note rather than a prorated number, since neither model covers it.

The AVMA's guideline arithmetic is a separate approximation, not a finer-grained version of the chart. At age 2 the guideline gives a medium dog 15 + 9 = 24 where interpolating the chart's rows gives 20.5; at age 5 the guideline gives 39 against the chart's 37. Life stage boundaries sit at the top of each AAHA range, so young adult runs to four years, and the puppy stage falls below the one-year floor and never appears. The senior boundary follows the figures the AVMA gives: seven years for the small class, and from the five-to-six range quoted for larger breeds, six years for the medium and large classes and five for the giant class. None of this is veterinary advice; care decisions belong with the dog's vet, not a chart.
