Computes the number of days remaining until a chosen future date, and expresses the same span as whole weeks plus days and as whole calendar months plus days. It uses UTC calendar arithmetic: both dates are pinned to noon UTC and subtracted, so time zones and daylight saving never shift the count. Inputs are a start date, defaulting to today, and a target date; today itself is not counted.

Pick the date you are counting down to and the calculator shows how many days are left, then splits that same span into weeks and days and into calendar months. The first field is set to today, so most of the time you fill in only the target — a wedding, a product launch, a holiday — and read the answer. The large number is the count of days remaining; the two lines beneath restate it as whole weeks plus days and whole months plus days. Everything runs in your browser as you type, and nothing is sent anywhere.

Where the countdown came from

The habit of counting downward toward a moment, rather than up from one, is younger than you might guess, and it reached engineering by way of storytelling rather than the other way round. The launch countdown is usually credited to Fritz Lang's silent picture Frau im Mond (Woman in the Moon), which premiered on 15 October 1929. To build tension before the rocket left for the Moon, Lang staged the launch as a descending count of the final seconds, the intertitles running down to "Jetzt" — now. Lang was not quite first: the British writer George Griffith had used the same device in his 1897 story The Great Crellin Comet, later expanded into the novel The World Peril of 1910, where the count also ends on the word now. What the film added was reach. Hermann Oberth, the rocketry pioneer hired as its technical adviser, moved in the same circle of German rocket enthusiasts as the young Wernher von Braun, who assisted Oberth with liquid-fuel engine tests around 1929, and the descending count travelled with that circle into the army rocket programme. The first V-2 to fly successfully, launched from Peenemünde on 3 October 1942, carried the Frau im Mond emblem painted on its base. After the Second World War the practice became routine at launch sites in the United States. The distance between a dramatic device and an engineering convention turned out to be about one film.

An older and gentler countdown had already entered the home. In 19th-century Germany, Protestant families marked the days of Advent toward Christmas by chalking a row of lines on a wall or door and letting a child wipe one away each morning. In 1839 the Hamburg pastor Johann Hinrich Wichern hung a cartwheel of candles in the prayer hall of the Rauhes Haus, his home for destitute children, and had one more lit on each day of Advent; that fixture is the ancestor of the Advent wreath. Those household rituals became a printed object at the turn of the 20th century. In 1902 the Protestant bookshop of Friedrich Trümpler in Hamburg issued a Christmas clock for children, its dial numbered 13 to 24, and in 1903 the Munich publisher Gerhard Lang brought out Im Lande des Christkinds: a sheet of twenty-four pictures to cut out and a second sheet with twenty-four spaces to paste them into, one for each day before Christmas. Calendars with little doors to open followed from 1920. Long before a web page could show the days remaining, people were counting them by hand, one erased mark at a time.

Counting days across the calendar

A countdown is only as reliable as the calendar underneath it, and that calendar has been corrected more than once. The version almost everyone now uses is the Gregorian calendar, decreed by Pope Gregory XIII in the bull Inter gravissimas of 24 February 1582 to fix a slow drift in the older Julian scheme, whose year of exactly 365.25 days ran about eleven minutes too long. Measured back to the Council of Nicaea in 325, the accumulated error had reached ten full days, so the reform simply deleted them: in the countries that adopted it at once, Thursday 4 October 1582 was followed by Friday 15 October. To stop the drift returning, the leap-year rule was tightened. A year divisible by four gains a 29 February, except that centurial years must also be divisible by 400, which is why 1700, 1800 and 1900 were ordinary years while 2000 was a leap year. The calculator applies that rule automatically, so a span crossing 29 February picks up the extra day and one crossing a skipped century does not.

Turning two dates into a single number of days is an old problem in astronomy, where observations spread across centuries have to be compared. The classicist Joseph Scaliger proposed the underlying scheme in his 1583 work De emendatione temporum: a single continuous era of 7,980 years anchored to a fixed origin far in the past. John Herschel turned it into a serial number for every individual day in his Outlines of Astronomy of 1849, and astronomers still use these Julian day numbers. The trick is exactly the one this page relies on. Once each date is a plain integer, the distance between two of them is a subtraction. Julian days begin at noon rather than midnight, because the astronomical day itself ran from noon to noon until 1 January 1925, keeping one night of observing on a single date. That is the same reason this calculator pins both dates to noon before subtracting.

The formula behind the count

Both dates are pinned to noon UTC before the subtraction, so daylight-saving shifts and time zones can never nudge the result across a day boundary. The weeks line divides the day count by seven and keeps the remainder as the spare days. The months line works differently: it counts whole calendar months first and then the leftover days, because a month can be anywhere from 28 to 31 days long and a flat 30-day average would slowly drift away from the real calendar.

A worked example

Leave the top date on today — 22 July 2026 as this page was written — and set the target to 25 December 2026. From one noon to the other is 156 days. Divide by seven and you get 22 weeks with 2 days spare. Counted on the calendar it is 5 months and 3 days: 22 July to 22 December is five whole months, and 22 December to the 25th adds the last three days. All three lines describe the same gap, just measured with different rulers.

Why today is not counted

The figure is the distance between two dates, not the number of dates in the range, so today itself is left out. If the target is tomorrow the answer is 1 — the classic one sleep to go rather than two dates on the wall calendar. Parents phrase it exactly this way, and the number here is that count of sleeps between now and the event. On the morning of the day itself the countdown reads 0.

Planning around the weekend

The day count tells you the size of the gap; the weekday tells you what to do with it. Say it is Thursday and something lands 9 days out. Nine days is 1 week and 2 days, which drops the target on a Saturday, so the real working deadline is the Friday before — a day earlier than the raw number implies. Whenever a countdown ends on a weekend, treat the preceding Friday as the cutoff for anything that needs an office, a bank or a courier.

Date habits differ by country

The arithmetic is identical everywhere, but two habits are not. The US writes dates month-first (12/25/2026) while the UK, most of the EU and Australia write them day-first (25/12/2026), and Canada mixes both, so read a typed target back before you trust it. Fixed holidays like Christmas sit on the same date worldwide, but movable ones do not: US Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, Canadian Thanksgiving the second Monday of October, and the UK spring bank holiday the last Monday in May. Confirm the actual date for the year in question before counting toward it.

How many days until Christmas 2026?

From 22 July 2026 there are 156 days until 25 December 2026, which works out to 22 weeks and 2 days. Because the start is set to today by default, open the page on any morning and it shows the current number of sleeps to go. By 1 December 2026 the same target reads 24 days.

Does the countdown include today or not?

No, today is not counted, because the result is the gap between two dates rather than a tally of the dates in between. A target of tomorrow shows 1, and a target of today shows 0. This matches how a sleeps-to-go count works: the number is how many nights stand between now and the event.

Why does the months line not match the days divided by 30?

Calendar months run from 28 to 31 days, so whole months are counted against the real calendar instead of a flat 30. From 22 July to 25 December is 5 months and 3 days, not the 5.2 you would get by dividing 156 by 30. The weeks line, by contrast, is a clean division by seven.

How do I count down to a date in a different year?

Enter the full target date and the span stretches across as many years as needed. A target of 22 July 2027 from 22 July 2026 shows 365 days, listed as 52 weeks and 1 day and as 12 months. Leap years are handled automatically, so a span that crosses 29 February picks up the extra day.

What happens if the target date has already passed?

The calculator refuses to count backwards and instead tells you how long ago the date was. Set a target of 15 July 2026 with a start of 22 July 2026 and it reports that the date passed 7 days ago. Swap the two dates, or reach for a date-difference tool, if measuring an elapsed gap is what you actually want.
